WoodWing Assets: DAM software reviewed

An enterprise digital asset management platform for newsrooms, publishers, museums, agencies, and manufacturers to organize and distribute digital assets.

Verdict

Buy it for publishing workflow and on-prem hosting; the public review trail is 30-odd entries, so demo it hard.

Buy it if

You are a publishing, agency, retail/eCommerce, manufacturing, or museum/GLAM team that wants an enterprise DAM with built-in photo/video editing, AI auto-tagging and AI-assisted search, brand portals, version control, and either fully managed cloud hosting or an on-premise/private-cloud install, and you're comfortable going through a sales quote rather than seeing prices upfront.

Do not buy it if

You need transparent, self-serve pricing to compare options without a sales call, or you need documented support for 3D assets, CAD files, facial recognition, GIS/geolocation tagging, offline access, or C2PA content credentials — none of these are mentioned anywhere on WoodWing's site.

Where it is strong

  • Automatic version control on every asset, singled out by the one detailed TrustRadius reviewer as a reason for the choice — TrustRadius, 2 reviews
  • Photo and video editing, AI auto-tagging and AI-assisted search run inside the DAM rather than requiring a separate creative tool — Vendor product pages
  • Brand portals for distributing assets outside the organisation are documented as part of the product — Vendor product pages
  • Offered as vendor-managed cloud or as an on-premise/private-cloud install, an option most current DAM vendors have dropped — Vendor deployment pages
  • Scores 4.3/5 across 28 G2 reviews, consistent with the 4.4-4.5/5 range shown on Capterra at a similar sample size — G2, 28 reviews

Where it is weak

  • Verified-tier evidence amounts to two TrustRadius reviews, the detailed one dating from 2021, so no trend can be read from it — TrustRadius, 2 reviews
  • That same reviewer flagged coarse workflow granularity and shallow reporting and analytics as the product's limits — TrustRadius, 2 reviews
  • No prices are published, so comparing it against alternatives requires going through a sales quote first — Vendor pricing page
  • Nothing on the vendor site documents 3D assets, CAD files, facial recognition, GIS tagging, offline access or C2PA credentials — Vendor site feature pages
  • Gartner Peer Insights and PeerSpot surface no numeric rating for Assets, leaving no second verified source to cross-check — Gartner Peer Insights / PeerSpot

Formats supported Assets Server can store any file type, but generates thumbnails/previews and extracts/embeds metadata only for a defined set of common formats (full extension table lives behind the vendor help center, which blocked automated fetch with HTTP 403). Confirmed recent additions: Linux-side support for JPEG XL (.jxl), OpenEXR (.exr), and AV1/AVIF (.avif); improved HEIC preview generation for images produced by modern smartphones (previously failed for some devices). Marketing pages also cite JPEG2000 support (added in the v6.10x line, 2023) and native handling of Adobe Photoshop and InDesign files. Not all formats support full metadata embedding — e.g. PNG has limited metadata support and some legacy PostScript-only EPS files support none.
Integrations Deepest integration is with the Adobe Creative Cloud ecosystem: Photoshop and InDesign, plus a separate WoodWing Smart Styles plugin for InDesign design workflows. 'WoodWing Connect' is marketed as the broader integration layer, combining APIs, webhooks, and plugins with a Workato-powered iPaaS for connecting to third-party apps. Assets also supports automated push integrations to CMS, e-commerce/webshop platforms, and PIM systems, triggered when an asset reaches a defined approval status (used for automated multi-channel publishing). Product pages reference a general 'Integrations Marketplace' but do not publish a full list of named connectors beyond Adobe.
Last release Per search-engine cached views of the official release notes (direct fetch blocked by HTTP 403 from the help center), the most recent entries are Assets version 6.121.1.522 (with Assets Agent 1.0.40.76), released 12 May 2026, and a prior release on 10 February 2026 — both explicitly noted as containing no new features (maintenance-only). Separately, the marketing 'What's New' page highlights 'WoodWing Assets 10' with a built-in photo/video editor, refreshed UI, mobile sharelinks, dark mode, an enhanced metadata panel, and a comments/activity hub, though no specific release date is given there; an earlier update (v6.10x, July 2023) is also referenced with enhanced uploading, Adobe integration, and JPEG2000 support. — changelog
API depth Assets ships a documented REST API (Swagger/OpenAPI 2.0 spec), testable directly from the API reference page and via curl, with a public Postman collection maintained on GitHub (WoodWing/ww-assets-postman-collection). Documented operations include login, browse, search, create, checkout, copy, and folder creation — i.e. a reasonably complete assets + metadata surface rather than a single-purpose or decorative endpoint. Beyond the core Assets API, 'WoodWing Connect' layers on webhooks and plugins plus a Workato-based iPaaS for pushing assets into CMS/e-commerce/PIM systems. A full endpoint-by-endpoint read of the reference could not be completed in this session because helpcenter.woodwing.com returned HTTP 403 to automated fetches; the above is reconstructed from search-engine snippets of the official docs and the GitHub repo, not a first-hand read of the complete reference. — API docs

Reviews, by how much to trust them

Verified tier: TrustRadius confirmed via direct browser visit (previously 403 to WebFetch) — Score 9 out of 10 from exactly 2 Reviews and Ratings; reviewer feedback (2021, Reseller/Business Development Director) emphasizes powerful search, easy internal/external sharing, and automatic version control, with cons around workflow granularity and reporting/analytics depth. Gartner Peer Insights and PeerSpot track WoodWing but surfaced no dedicated numeric rating or confirmed review volume specific to WoodWing Assets — thin-to-no verified presence on those two platforms. Incentivized tier: G2 confirmed via direct browser visit at 4.3/5 from 28 reviews (matches the earlier estimate closely). Capterra shows roughly 4.4-4.5/5 from 17-44 reviews depending on snapshot (not independently re-verified this pass). Per project rule, G2 and Capterra/GetApp/Software Advice share common ownership since 05.02.2026 and count as one commercial review family, not independent confirmations. Long tail (GitHub issues, vendor forums, Reddit, procurement/tenders, job postings) not checked in this pass.
