DAM Platforms That Handle CAD, BIM and 3D Files

That’s worth stating plainly because this is a feature tag, not an industry label. Only four of the ten — Daminion, Canto, Kontainer, and Aprimo — are also tagged for the AEC vertical; the rest serve manufacturing, agency, ecommerce, healthcare, or other teams that simply need a DAM able to ingest and organize CAD/BIM/3D files alongside everything else, without being an architecture-and-construction platform at all. If your requirement is narrowly “don’t choke on a .dwg or a 3D model,” this list of ten is the right starting point — not a page built around the AEC industry specifically.

Deployment is the first real fork in the road. Nine of the ten are cloud-only by their listed deployment options. Daminion is the exception: its deployment list includes both cloud and on-prem, and its best_fit line describes it as suited to teams that need assets to stay on their own infrastructure. If keeping CAD or BIM files — which can carry real intellectual property — off a third-party server is a hard requirement, Daminion is the only vendor in this pool that confirms that option outright. Nuxeo’s common_complaint is a useful caution here too: the roster notes there’s no explicit confirmation of on-premise on Nuxeo’s product page, so on-prem availability there would need to be verified directly rather than assumed.

Pricing transparency is the second pattern, and it’s a stark one: all ten vendors in this pool are marked published_price: false. Every single one requires a quote or demo before you see a number. The common_complaint field captures how that plays out differently by vendor — Canto’s tiers are “named and described but cannot be compared on cost,” CELUM’s pricing page “contains neither tiers nor figures,” Orange Logic has “no price anywhere on the site — only a demo,” and Sitecore Content Hub runs everything through a demo with no tiers or prices published. Kontainer adds a further wrinkle: several features are priced separately, so even a quote may not represent the final bill if you need CAD-specific functionality bundled in.

Billing structure varies enough to matter. Daminion bills a flat annual subscription covering all features, integrations, updates and support. MediaValet’s billed_units explicitly states it does not charge per user — unlimited users and permission groups are part of the pitch — which its buy_if frames as a fit for large or fast-growing teams, including agencies and external partners, where per-seat DAM pricing would otherwise balloon. Canto, by contrast, bills by team size and storage volume with power-user pricing undisclosed upfront. Aprimo and CELUM are quoted per customer based on chosen modules and user count; Aprimo’s buy_if names a realistic all-in budget of roughly $50,000+/year, and Sitecore Content Hub’s buy_if assumes $30k+/year in licensing plus a comparable implementation spend.

Scale and file size deserve a specific flag for this feature set, since CAD, BIM and 3D assets tend to run large. Kontainer’s dont_buy_if is explicit about this: it warns against picking the platform if you manage a large, fast-growing, high-resolution or video-heavy library where storage-tier costs and batch-upload or search performance at scale matter more than day-one ease of use, or if you need robust built-in duplicate detection. That’s a meaningful caveat set against Kontainer’s own strength, which is fast onboarding backed by a thirty-day no-commitment trial.

One vendor in this pool is worth flagging for a different reason: Storyteq’s own dont_buy_if says plainly that if digital asset management — search, metadata and taxonomy, rights and governance at scale — is your primary requirement, Storyteq isn’t the fit. It’s built for template-driven, localized or personalized video and banner ad production, with asset storage treated as a bundled convenience rather than the core offering. It carries the CAD tag, but buyers evaluating it as a DAM first should read that caveat carefully.

Finally, implementation effort separates this group as much as price does. Orange Logic’s buy_if expects real admin time — reviewers cited in the roster put it at weeks to months — for configuration, training and certification, aimed at museums, archives and media companies with complex multi-department permissioning. Nuxeo’s buy_if assumes in-house or contracted developers and enterprise scale (100+ users). CELUM and Sitecore Content Hub both assume dedicated IT or an SI partner. Against that end of the spectrum, Kontainer and Daminion are positioned as faster to stand up — which is its own trade-off worth weighing against the storage-scale and independent-verification caveats attached to each.
