Prepress file preparation

Prepress file preparation is the technical work of converting an approved design into a print-ready file — correct color mode, resolution, bleed, embedded fonts — before it goes to plate or press.

Why it matters in a DAM

A DAM needs to store both the editable native file (INDD, AI, layered PSD) and the final flattened press-ready output as separate, clearly labeled renditions. If only the flattened export survives in the library, a late text correction or a reprint at a different vendor means rebuilding the file from a flattened PDF instead of simply editing the source.

Prepress file preparation is the set of technical checks and fixes that turn a signed-off design into a file a printer can actually run.
