Total cost of ownership (DAM)

The full cost of a DAM over its useful life — licensing, implementation, integration, storage, training, migration, and internal admin time — not just the quoted subscription price.

Why it matters in a DAM

DAM subscription pricing is usually the smallest visible number in a much larger cost picture; implementation services, custom integrations to PIM, CMS, or e-commerce systems, ongoing metadata governance labor, and eventual migration cost when switching vendors routinely add up to exceed the license fee over a multi-year term. Gartner's original TCO framework, built for enterprise IT generally, applies directly here — it explicitly includes the opportunity cost of downtime and productivity loss, both of which are real DAM costs when search is broken or the system is unavailable during a campaign.
