A JPEG can hold IPTC and XMP fields directly in the file. A PSD&#8217;s layer names and history live in a proprietary structure Photoshop understands natively but most other tools don&#8217;t. A glTF file describes its own geometry and materials in a readable JSON structure. None of that metadata is interchangeable without a system that knows how to read and normalize it \u2014 which is the actual job a DAM does that a folder structure can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why It Matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without a systematic way of handling multiple formats, a few predictable things go wrong:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Version confusion.<\/strong> Teams grab whatever file is easiest to find, not the current or approved one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Time lost to hunting.<\/strong> Assets scattered across drives with inconsistent naming take longer to locate than to recreate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Incompatibility.<\/strong> A 3D or motion file that only opens in one specialist tool becomes a bottleneck the moment that person is out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lost rights information.<\/strong> Embedded metadata does not survive every channel. That matters more every month as generated and camera-captured assets sit side by side in the same library.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Search and filtering by usage, not just by format.<\/strong> Tagging by project, campaign, or rights status \u2014 with format as one filter among several \u2014 is what lets someone pull &#8220;approved hero shots for the Q3 launch&#8221; instead of browsing folders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Renditions and transcoding.<\/strong> Serving the right codec to the right destination isn&#8217;t a cosmetic detail \u2014 it&#8217;s a real cost and performance lever.
