A DAM platform — or the cloud storage layer underneath it — typically defines a handful of tiers, from an always-on “hot” class down to a “deep archive” class that can take hours to retrieve from. Each step down the ladder cuts the per-gigabyte storage price substantially, and each step down also adds latency or a retrieval fee when someone actually needs the file.

For a DAM specifically, tiering matters because asset libraries grow in a very lopsided way: a small fraction of files (this quarter’s campaign, current product photography) get opened constantly, while the bulk of the archive — last year’s shoots, retired packaging, superseded video edits — sits untouched for months or years. Automatically moving that untouched majority to a cheaper tier is one of the few storage cost levers a DAM admin can pull without deleting anything or degrading the experience for active work.

The failure mode is applying tiering rules that only look at asset age, ignoring actual access patterns. A three-year-old brand guideline PDF or an ICC color profile that print vendors download every month is technically “old” but functionally hot. If it gets swept into a cold tier by a blanket age-based rule, every request for it now costs money and takes minutes instead of being instant — a frustrating regression that’s invisible until someone actually needs the file under deadline.

The concept holds across providers even though the tier names themselves differ:

Tier concept

AWS S3

Google Cloud Storage

Azure Blob Storage

Hot

S3 Standard

Standard

Hot tier

Cool / infrequent

S3 Standard-IA

Nearline

Cool tier

Cold

S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval

Coldline

Cold tier

Archive

S3 Glacier Deep Archive

Archive

Archive tier

Storage tiering assigns files to different storage classes — hot, cool, cold, archive — based on how often they’re accessed, trading retrieval speed for a lower per-GB price.

Most platforms use access-frequency rules or fixed age thresholds — for example, move anything untouched for 180 days to a cooler tier — configured by an admin, applied automatically by a lifecycle policy rather than judged file by file.
Does tiering delete or change the asset?
No. Tiering only changes where a file physically sits and how fast or costly it is to retrieve; the asset record, metadata, permissions, and version history in the DAM stay exactly as they were.
Can end users tell which tier an asset is stored in?
Usually not directly — they just notice some downloads are instant and others show a delay or a "preparing your file" message, which is the system waiting on a cold- or archive-tier retrieval to finish.
Does tiering affect thumbnail and preview generation?
Typically no — thumbnails and low-resolution proxies are kept in hot storage regardless of where the master file sits, so browsing and search stay fast even when the original has been archived.
How should legal holds interact with tiering?
Assets under litigation hold or an active contract dispute should be excluded from automated tiering rules, since a same-day production deadline doesn't wait for an hours-long archive retrieval.
Do all cloud providers define tiers the same way?
No — AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure each name and price their tiers differently (for example S3 Standard/Glacier versus Google Cloud Storage Standard/Nearline/Coldline/Archive), so a DAM's tiering behavior depends on which storage backend it runs on.
2026-08-07
S3 Standard storage costs roughly $0.023/GB-month versus $0.00099/GB-month for S3 Glacier Deep Archive (US East, list pricing).
Google Cloud Storage defines Standard, Nearline, Coldline, and Archive classes with different minimum storage durations and retrieval fees.
[2482,2493,2473,2638,2558,2484
Storage tiering assigns files to different storage classes — hot, cool, cold, archive — based on how often they're accessed, trading retrieval speed for a lower per-GB price.
DAM libraries accumulate far more assets than ever get reused: campaign masters, raw photography, superseded video cuts.
