A brand guideline answers “what is the rule” — the logo’s minimum size, the exact Pantone value for the primary color. A style guide answers “how do I apply good judgment within the rule” — which of three approved fonts reads best in a dense data table, how tight the crop on lifestyle photography should feel, whether a given piece of copy sounds like the brand’s voice or just uses the brand’s vocabulary.

In a DAM, that distinction matters for how the document gets used. A brand guideline is checked against, almost like a compliance test — did this asset break a fixed rule. A style guide is consulted while working, closer to a reference a designer keeps open in another tab. Placing the style guide directly alongside the template library and photography collections it describes, rather than in the same folder as legal-grade brand rules, reflects how it actually gets used day to day.

The practical risk of not separating the two shows up with external partners. An agency given only a combined document often can’t tell whether a stylistic recommendation (“prefer candid, unposed photography”) is optional guidance or a hard requirement on par with the logo clear-space rule, and either over-complies at the expense of creativity or under-complies and produces off-brand work.

The detailed reference for applying brand standards in practice — grid systems, spacing, photography style, writing tone — distinct from the higher-level brand guideline.

A brand guideline sets fixed, non-negotiable specs like the logo's minimum size or exact Pantone value.
