Add a fourth channel that records opacity per pixel, from fully transparent to fully opaque, and the image becomes RGBA. That fourth channel is the alpha channel, and it&#8217;s what lets an image be composited cleanly onto any background without a visible edge or box around it.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every format can carry one. JPEG&#8217;s compression scheme has no provision for transparency, so any alpha data is lost the moment an image is saved as a JPEG, even if it existed in the source file. PNG, by contrast, supports a full 8-bit alpha channel \u2014 256 graduated levels of transparency \u2014 which is why it&#8217;s the default choice for logos, icons, and product cutouts in a DAM.
