The harder part is doing it without losing what makes the asset useful once it is moved.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Metadata is the part most commonly lost in a poorly designed archiving process. If an asset&#8217;s tags, credit line, rights terms, and version history live in the DAM&#8217;s database rather than embedded in the file itself, moving the file to cold storage without also exporting or migrating that surrounding record leaves a bare file with no way to find or contextualize it later \u2014 technically preserved, practically useless.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A working archiving process also needs a defined retrieval path: how long it takes to bring an archived asset back to active use, who can request it, and whether restoring it also restores its original metadata and version history or requires manual reconstruction.
