Getty Images, historically the largest seller of RM content, prices these licences per use, so the same photo licensed for a six-month North American print campaign requires a new licence, or an amendment, to run in a digital ad or a different region.

This is the opposite design from royalty-free licensing, and it’s the reason RM assets need much richer rights metadata in a DAM than RF ones do. A single boolean “licensed” flag is meaningless for an RM asset — what matters is the specific scope that was purchased, because using it outside that scope is infringement even though a licence technically exists.

Practically, this means RM assets in a DAM need an expiry date, a territory field, and a use-type field that the system can actively check against before letting someone drag the asset into a new project — otherwise the metadata exists but nobody consults it at the moment it matters.

A licence priced and scoped to a specific use — duration, territory, media, print run, exclusivity — that must be repurchased or amended for any new use beyond what was originally granted.

It means the licence is priced and scoped to a specific use — duration, territory, media type, print run, exclusivity — and must be repurchased or amended for any use beyond what was originally granted.
Why is a single "licensed: yes" field not enough for a rights-managed asset?
Because what matters is the specific scope purchased — using the asset outside that scope is infringement even though a licence technically exists.
